My blog today, however, is not about staying alive by avoiding getting your brains blown out by some belligerent gang. That fate, or karma, as devotees would say, is far less severe than what this blog is about - the consequence of surfing the dark side of the web, of taking bad company.

I can hear the naysayers now, "You have got to be kidding. How could a few keystrokes and a click or two of the mouse be more serious than a .22 caliber bullet firmly implanted in the brain stem?" But upon some reflection, you can probably sense where I am going with this. Not only can a venture into "forbidden" web territory agitate the senses in ways we won’t discuss, but a casual so called “devotional” exploration can actually rip asunder the tender devotional creeper that one so carefully waters and nourishes daily. Yes, the very computer you are now using to read this blog, can lead one to the very worst in bad company and dampen any enthusiasm one has to progress in spiritual life.

Before you read any further, let me say that where I am going today could get me in a lot of trouble. In fact, if this blog is noticed by the “bad company” I am going to be speaking about, they will probably use my laundry list of personal faults as the highlight of their next web campaign. And believe me, if it is possible to engage in any offensive act to Srila Prabhupada, Lord Krishna, or to the community of Vaisnava’s I have probably done it in spades over the last 38 years. Due to MY offenses I have already been deservedly kicked by many agents of Krishna’s various potencies and can only expect more of the same due to my fallen nature. These calamities I have brought upon myself by MY personal Vaisnava aparadha, so a little more assassination of my decrepit character endured in the cause of this message is a price I willing pay. Being a member of the above mentioned “over the hill club,” I have no real aspirations other than to some day, before I expire, chant once the name "Krishna" with some semblance of sincerity. Therefore, I will push on and hope that what follows is of some value to my readers.

Are you ready for another adage? Have you ever heard of a “wolf in sheep's clothing?” Do you remember when Putana disguised herself as a mother of Vraja in order to poison baby Krishna? How about when Vatsasura disguised himself as a calf in order to kill both Krishna and Balarama? Well dear devotees, out there on the web are many sites where so-called good-intentioned devotees want to capture you in their web of propaganda with the result of finding fault with Krishna’s sincere devotees and doing harm to Srila Prabhupada’s movement. Unfortunately, some of these devotees have become so bewildered due to Vaisnava aparada that they actually think they are performing an invaluable service to Srila Prabhupada and saving innocent devotees from falling under the control of corrupt leadership. With fingers pointed to all sincere and content devotees working to push on Lord Caitanya’s movement under ISKCON’s banner, they falsely assert that such devotees act due to blind following devoid of discrimination.

Despite all that has transpired in the often trying times since Srila Prabhupada’s physical departure, or even if one has some discontent with current management, how long can we live in the past or neglect the present need to unite for the benefit of all of humanity? We must refocus on the task at hand and this requires that we not forsake prudent future planning, nor learning the lessons from our individual and collective mistakes of the past. Is this not the Sankirtan movement? Does that not mean working together? Was is not the departing wish of one of the greatest devotees to ever walk on this planet that we show our love for him by working cooperatively to spread this movement after his departure?

I am not going to waste your valuable time in pointing out the detrimental effects of giving even a moments time to visiting, much less associating with those writers on the web who only blaspheme Vaisnava’s. Fulfilling their desires, Krishna has even given some of them talent in the poetry of flowery words or expertise in philosophical word jugglery. But in the end, their inability to extract the essence of good intention that permeates this wonderful movement, and their constant picking at the scars already healed from our collective battle of surviving without Srila Prabhupada’s vapu, only goes to fully expose the wickedness of their crow-like mentality.

With a straw between my teeth, I beg that we all sincerely work to remain true to our swanlike heritage, avoid creating enmity by discourse that dampens others enthusiasm, and show the brotherly love desired by Srila Prabhupada by cooperating to spread Lord Caitanya’s movement. If we can just set aside minor differences and fully embrace Prabhupada’s goal of planting the seed of devotional service in the hearts of all humanity, then maybe, just maybe, we can bring tears of joy to Srila Prabhupada’s lotus eyes. And I am fully confident that those transcendental tears can flood the entire universe in ecstatic love of Godhead and liberate all inhabitants from the miseries of material existence. Now I don’t know about you, but in my estimation, that is something for which I am willing to sacrifice this life.

_/\ò_

Dulal Chandra dasa

Where have all the hippies gone.

Namaste.

The other day, while filling up at the gas station, I had to ask myself, “Where have all the hippies gone?” You know that “we’re not going to take it” generation; the ones who left home, left school, and every other material security to stand in front of national guard troops placing flowers in the barrels of guns to stop a senseless war and a corrupt administration. It seems that the generation of change has now given up the fight for what’s right, abandoned their rebellious natures and are now willing to be pushed around by both corporate America and a government gone wild. This was the generation that brought you flag burning, draft card burning, political figure placard burning and yes, even bra burning. They fostered the most meaningful and poetic music of any generation in known history. They began movements to save the planet, save the whales, the dolphins, the children… And they actually did bring about some change in this country that eventually spread, in a small way, throughout the planet. Now, as I hand the clerk at the convenience store over $50 to fill up my gas tank and contemplate my lost civil liberties, I ask again “Where have all the hippies gone?”

Well, I just saw one group on the golf course teeing off at the 8th hole; others were meeting with their lawyers, bankers, and brokers. A full table at the local restaurant all looked to be about my age. MY AGE, wait a minute. I am talking about MY generation. Have I forgotten about that hair to my knees, those tie-dyed tees, those late night dubies, playing music until three? Sorry, as you can see I wasn’t one of the creative poets of my generation. But I was there, and believe me what is going on in our society today would have brought about constant sit-ins, marches, boycotts, and every other imaginable form of protest until the gas prices came down, the war ended and basic civil liberties were reinstated for every man, woman and child in this nation.

Which brings me to the point of this blog, complacency. The once caring ’60’s generation now wiles away in their material comfort heaven, counting their 401Ks’ and planning on retirement in the Bahamas, all the while ignoring lost liberties, corporate and governmental corruption, and a environmental catastrophe that is destroying Mother Earth. And what does this have to do with my Krishna consciousness, you ask. Nothing - if you are continually striving to better your spiritual life in a very determined way - every minute, of every hour, of every day. But, if you are not yet on that totally unmotivated, uninterrupted platform, then this hippy story can give rise to some developmental contemplation. Now there’s a new New Age term for you - developmental contemplation.

I won’t overly belabor the point here, but one must work daily to assure that their devotional practice is not falling by the way of those aging hippies. Daily strive to advance in your loving devotion to Krishna as you attend to the nine practices. Chant a little more attentively… strive to hear more during japa, kirtan and class…spend more time reading and a lot less time in idle gossip…worship with true dedication to pleasing the deity…seek out and take shelter of those devotees who truly inspire you to advance - - - you get my drift. Most of all, never become complacent…never slacken your determination to attain pure unalloyed devotional service…don’t let yourself become content to just be a devotee - constantly strive to be the very best devotee you can be. Don’t act humble – become truly humble by never desiring a speck of honor. Fully surrender by abandoning all self-motivated desire - Krishna has so much more real pleasure to offer than the petty illusions available in this temporary material playground. Cruel time will eventually resolve all the corporate greed, governmental ineptitude, rising inflation and environmental chaos that has resulted from social complacency. But personal complacency in our devotional lives can rob us of the sweet nectar of Krishna’s loving embrace for what will seem like an eternity.

_/\ò_

Dulal Chandra dasa

Tribute for Taru (written for a memorial held by his family)

Dear Friends,

I say friends not because we have ever met, but because of the close friendship I had with your intimate relative and friend, a kind soul I knew as “Taru”: devotee, writer, public speaker, humorist, ascetic and a true lover of the Supreme Lord. I dare say that my knowledge and appreciation of Taru differs considerably from yours simply because of our varied perspectives. You, of course, knew him as a close relative, someone you grew up with and loved, or nurtured into adulthood by your good guidance and love. Others of you were his contemporaries in companionship and again, dare I say, love. But as Taru matured into manhood his interests and attentions were diverted. He (seemed to) began to distance himself from your love, and he sought his love elsewhere. And this, I know, must have broken your hearts. Where was your dear Tom? Why had he gone off to some commune in the back hills of West Virginia? Did we do something wrong?

Well, let me set your mind and fond memories as ease. All of your nurturing loves combined to develop the most magnificent, benevolent, and spiritually advanced Taru, who was my dear friend. Today’s society places little value on those traits of character which are truly admirable for those seeking spiritual advancement in this human form of life. Too often we throw aside truthfulness, austerity, cleanliness, and mercy for greed, hypocrisy, deceitfulness and other lustful ambitions which we will not discuss on this auspicious occasion. But Taru held the truly admirable characteristics of saintly behavior like a torch as he sough to find the essence of all existence.

Although we are not here today to discuss religious philosophy, I could not in good conscience offer any homage to Taru without glorifying what he held most dear to his heart. So please give a moment of your time to contemplate the essential life teachings that Tom held so dear and to which he dedicated his life. To this end please allow me to crack open the timeless transcendental teachings of Vedic culture, in order to shed some light on Taru’s truly saintly character. Unknown to our culture, but commonly accepted throughout time and the varied universes, concrete spiritual direction is available to all humanity in the eternal spiritual instruction coming from the Lord Himself. To that end Taru humbly submitted to a bonafide spiritual teacher, one who actually knew God personally, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami, loving referred to as Srila Prabhupada by his disciples.

Srila Prabhupada, a pure devotee of God of the topmost stature, accepted Taru as his disciple. And Taru accepted Srila Prabhupada as his guru, his spiritual instructor, and he took the instructions of Srila Prabhupada as his very life and soul. This was not done as some passing fancy. He did not fall sway to some charlatan swami. He was not conned into some mindless cult, for you know his determined character would never fall prey to any cheap tricks when it came to that thing he held most dear, true knowledge - the absolute truth. Rather Srila Prabhupada offered the topmost knowledge of the soul and a simple spiritual solution to the dilemma of material existence, pure love of God through complete immersion in God consciousness by chanting the Lords holy names. And of all Gods hundreds and millions of names the name Krishna, meaning “all attractive”, Rama meaning “all powerful” and Hare “the one who takes away all obstacles” are most significant. Thus this practice of spiritual realization is commonly referred to as the Hare Krishna Movement, for the followers chant

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare
Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare

to attain spiritual perfection.

I know that if I were personally with you today, many of you would approach and ask, tell me about the time you spent with Tom. What did you do? how did you live? where did you live? what kept him in a farm commune in West Virginia instead of studying at the university or working in a profession? So let me provide a small glimpse into those days on the farm back in the ’70s.

Our lives were very austere and simple. I would imagine your conception of a monks lifestyle in a monastery would not be too far off, except I truly doubt that monks enjoy their spiritual practice a fraction of the extent that we enjoyed our experience as young men in Krishna Consciousness. We were truly thrilled daily, as we seriously worked to purify our minds and existence by the simple process of devotional service to God. Now don’t get me wrong, giving up the carnal pleasure of material life is no walk in the park, but when the going got rough we took shelter of the good guidance and saintly association of those who were more spiritually advanced and steady. And that’s where Taru shined. He was fully convinced of the significance of spiritual advancement and determined to take full advantage of its benefits. His spiritual guidance was much sought after. It was as if he had been doing this for lifetimes, which from his shared realizations I have no doubt that he had. Oh, did I mention, one of the fundamental understandings of Krishna consciousness is that we are eternal souls and are subject to reincarnation until we become fully spiritually realized.

So back to life on the farm. We got up every morning very, very, very early. And after rising at such a Godly hour (another belief of Krishna consciousness here, early morning is the absolute best time to make spiritual advancement) we proceeded to wash off the foggy mind and dirty body with a nice cold (in winter bitterly cold) shower. Now that got the blood flowing, and we proceeded to the community’s temple to sit in meditation. Our meditation was not a silent staring at the tip of he nose, nor contemplation of the third eye or even looking at our navel. We chanted Hare Krishna on beads, absorbing our minds in the Lords Holy names

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare
Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare

This we did for a couple of hours, and then we proceeded to worship at Radha and Krishna’s altar by singing and dancing together, this time we added musical instruments as we chanted.

And then you would look around and Tom was gone. Yes, he would just vanish from the temple and become an entirely different personality, a young cowherd boy. If you were to follow him you would soon find him at the utters of cows, filling bucket after bucket with fresh warm milk. Later that kind offering from mother cow would be skimmed of its creamy butter, cultured for fresh yogurt, the butter clarified for ghee that was used to fry breads and vegetables. You can’t imagine all the wonderful and fully nourishing foods from the milk the cows so graciously provided through Tom’s loving service. I feel another belief coming on, yes, yes there it is - we observed a diet of strict vegetarian fare of fresh vegetables, fruits, grains and milk products. These were all prepared with love and devotion and offered to God for His pleasure and later relished at meals as Krishna prasadam (mercy). We will return to this a little later.

As the day progressed, Taru spent much of his time reading scripture and writing wonderful articles for the local community journal The Brijabasi Spirit. He and I would also do graphic layout and camera work together to prepare this monthly publication. Taru was involved in so many varied services at New Vrindaban Community that I can’t even recount them all. But there was not a moment of his valuable time that he did not use fully in spiritual service. As I said, he was a true saint.

During the summer months I had the pleasure of sporting with Taru in the late afternoon at the local bathing pond. This spiritual reservoir was named Radha Kunda and provided not only relief from the summer heat and ones daily fatigue, but also washed us of any offenses in our spiritual practice. The significance of this bathing ghat (pond) is beyond the scope of this presentation, however, let me just say it was a transcendental experience millions of times more enlivening than just a swim in the lake. And Tom very much enjoyed this.

You are certainly aware that in most spiritual disciplines a celibate life is accepted by the highest order. For Taru this was certainly the case. For a very short time he was married to one of the most celebrated, beautiful, and spiritually advanced young ladies in the community. But his fixed determination to exclusively dedicate everything to spiritual advancement made it difficult for him to see the significance of a spiritual union in marriage. This union was unfortunately very short lived.

Before I conclude there is one other very amazing characteristic of Taru which I must mention - his HUGE appetite, actually it was voracious. Now I touched upon earlier the fact that as devotees we only eat food that has first been lovingly prepared for the Lord’s enjoyment. By this humble approach of only eating what God has first tasted, one’s eating transforms into the taking of a holy sacrament. Once this holy food becomes available to the devotees, it is called prasadam, meaning “the Lord’s mercy”. And it not only nourishes the body, but it also purifies one’s existence due to the spiritual touch of the Supreme Lord. Taru absolutely LOVED this manifestation of the Lord’s mercy. He, like a lovesick teenager, was so smitten with prasadam that he would embark upon countless adventures in his pursuit of his heart’s desire. I will not even try to recount these adventures myself, as Taru himself has personally written a series of articles entitled “Confessions of a Prasadam Addict.” I beg you to please take a few minutes out of your busy lives and personally associate with Tom through these writings of his. This will truly bring great joy to your heart and a hugh smile to your face, maybe even an uncontrollable laugh to your being, and you will certainly enter into his intimate association through these wonderful articles.

Although Taru accepted and embraced a lifestyle of spiritual discipline quite contrary to our western ways, and although he threw aside all that we often value and cherish, and even more personal to you, although he may have seemed to have push aside YOUR love for him, this was certainly not the case. Rather, by enveloping himself in determined (and let me tell you Taru was the most determined) devotional service to the Supreme, he was truly offering the very essence of his eternal love to both you and all of humanity. Such a truly saintly character is hardly ever seen in today’s world. Well, as I said, Taru was truly as saint among men. He was that rare pearl that only every hundreds of years washes upon the shore with the trillions of grains of sand. More I cannot say least he take offense at my praise out of his profound humility.

So among all these varied words, I hope you have gained some insight that has only increased your profound love for our beloved Tom, and my dear friend Taru. I was most fortunate to have had his divine association and presence in my life. His saintly character and determined example of what it means to truly be a man of God I hope will some day become that torch by which I too may find a way to our beloved Lord.

Thank you so very much.

Dulal Chandra dasa

if its worth doing, its worth doing right

Namaste.

Growing up in the ‘50’s during the era of “Leave it to Beaver” and “The Lone Ranger”, black and white TV programming was presented for the whole family and to some small extent instilled family values and ethics. Now please remember, American society was somewhat peaceful having just finished the second world war and having not yet begun the next major conflict - Vietnam and the hippie revolution. At that time many slogans were prevalent and common in the vernacular of everyday life to fortify work ethics and values, two of which were “if its worth doing, its worth doing right.” and “God is in the details.”

Both of these sayings bring to light the significance of the determined attention that is usually the deciding factor between success or failure in any endeavor. Let me give you a simple example from my own daily experiences centered around my constant companion, my MAC. Whops, author ducking behind desk as Windows users throw various articles in frustration over their choice to use outdated technology that seldom works in their attempt to accomplish simple tasks. I digress, my apologies - windows machines are truly good - not. Boy I can’t help myself, again I beg your don’t abandon me despite my transgressions.

Now where was I , attention to detail, keeping your eye on the ball, doing things right, everyday example - so because I work on a user friendly MAC I often plow forward with new software programs without ever consulting a manual or the online help. This usually works for me, but often in stubbornness I allow myself to become completely frustrated in trying to accomplish the simplest of tasks when all I needed to do was “do it right,” read the instructions and follow the examples. Perhaps some of you have experienced this, maybe not. How about when you tried to assemble that pressboard desk without reading the instructions. Yea, I know you read the da...... instructions and still couldn’t set it up. Anyway you get me drift, “if its worth doing, its worth doing right.”

Wow, all these words and not one Krishna yet, just see how easily I become distracted. Lets get this rambling blog back on track, the “Krishna is in the details” track and those things which often determine weather we make noticeable progress in our daily spiritual advancement through regulated practice or simply while away in that grey foggy mist of unfocused, inattentive service. And we all know those things, those lackadaisical rounds, that nap during class, the neglect of setting aside some quality time daily for reading Bhagavad-gita and Srimad Bhagavatam. Doing devotional service because I have to, not because I want to. Basically not remembering that this is the the most worthwhile, most meaningful, most liberating, most of the most thing I could possibly be doing for my ultimate well being.

All the great acarya’s have gone to considerable lengths to provide us with volumes of detailed instructions on how to progress in spiritual life, so much so that it is often mind boggling and we do feel overwhelmed. However, why not try a very simple application of those old ’50s axioms. Remember Krishna IS in the details and do everything for His pleasure with full loving devotion and attention. A remarkable transformation in your devotional service will gradually take place as you pay close attention to those rounds, constantly pulling the mind back to focused hearing. You will actually feel transcendental satisfaction when you actively listen to class and forgo that morning nap you didn’t really need. And, believe me or not, as you daily do your service remembering Krishna IS in the details of even the simplest of services one offers for the pleasure of His pure devotees, you will gradually begin to relish a remembrance of His transcendental pastimes which will transport you from this miserable material world to that eternal spiritual abode of unimaginable spiritual bliss.

This is the storehouse of eternal loving ecstasy that Lord Caitanya has flung open the door to, and all we have to do is drink of this transcendental nectar by selflessly spreading Krishna Consciousness to anyone and everyone we meet. And then, just as Srila Bhaktivinode Thakura explains, we will see everything around us transformed into Vaikuntha. At that time there will no question “is God in the details.”

_/\ò_

Dulal Chandra dasa

.....it works !

Namaste.

Many years ago, before personal computers were the norm or even available, I worked implementing computerized accounting systems by replacing an office full of typists, accountants and secretaries with computers that spit out fancy invoices and kept tract of everything with the push of a button. As you can imagine good software was had to find in those days, and a majority of my time was spent looking for good accounting software that worked without (major) bugs. Eventually I found one very wonderful software product that did it all, and did it with style and elegance. Interestingly enough the developers had a strange sense of humor, every time you quit their program a simple message was displayed on the screen

.......it works !

In those days, when computer technology was in its infancy, that simple statement was worth its weight in gold for often programs would abruptly halt with nothing but a senseless stream of illegible characters incessantly rolling down the screen.

That very same simplicity and succinctness lies at the heart of this Krishna Consciousness movement, ......it works ! However hard our conditioned mind and senses may work at convincing us otherwise, the truth of the matter is “just chant Hare Krishna and your life will become sublime.” Not only that, but the lives of anyone and everyone who participate in the spreading of this movement, no matter how small or insignificant their contribution may appear, will become ultimately successful. Yes, thats right, ......it works !

It behooves us to keep the realization of this simple truth firmly fixed in our minds. You may even have to remove a shoe in the morning, or grab a stick in the evening to convince the contrary mind, but do not let the day to day hassle, hustle or bustle of life cast aside this simple realization. The consequence of our forgetfulness of this simple understanding ......it works ! can wreck havoc on our spiritual advancement. Believe me I know, I’ve been there, done that and its not a pleasant journey.

Of course those sages of culture and elegance will rightly point out that what I am speaking of is faith, and they would quote the appropriate verse to solidify their point. But I am going to take a less refined approach to our divine philosophy in this blog, and I humbly beg my readers to tolerate this approach, understanding my desire to reach a broader audience and to tell you the truth, my lack of good memory.

So back to my point, what was that, ahhh yes, the unpleasant journey, that consequence of not remembering ......it works ! Well first off, the wicked mind immediately rushes forward with its host of alternatives to our regulated spiritual practice...

--------------- Hey there! yea you! sitting like a yogi acting so majestic in your lotus pose caressing those japa beads, I just glimpsed an ad for a new movie we should go see, you can finish those rounds later, come on, lets go.

---------------- What are you doing ? ? ? standing in front of that mirror placing tilok on your nose, we don’t need to go to the feast today, our favorite team is playing on the tele, you want to miss the game - for what ? ? ?

You get my drift. We put off those spiritually nourishing engagements with justifications like, I’ll put my nose to the spiritual grindstone tomorrow, next week, next month, next year, when I get old, when ...................... whoops another life wasted, I forgot ..........it works ! I can become fully Krishna Consciousness in one lifetime if I simply follow the instructions of the spiritual master.

Worse still we judge Krishna’s sincere devotees, forgetful of the rapid progress they are making in spiritual life, unmindful of their ever increasing spiritual qualification and transcendental realization because we forgot .........it works ! This unfortunately leads to our allowing our minds to see devotees the way they were back when, "I remember he used to...", "I saw her do that once". Oh no, who is that I see over there in the corner, can’t miss him, whoa he’s big, that beast determined to trample the little creeper of devotion that has sprouted from the seed planted by Krishna’s pure devotee in my heart. The mad elephant of offenses, an offense at the lotus feet of Krishna’s devotee.

Anyway, thanks for giving me a moment of your valuable time. This whole blogging thing is new to me, but I will try my best to make it increasingly interesting and worth the read. And falling at your feet I beg, always remember ......it works ! And when --you know who-- tries to tell you otherwise, you can always reach for that shoe.

_/\ò_

Dulal Chandra dasa
