Regarding you recommendation given to another to chant Hare Krishna, one does not have to look upon such preaching efforts as offensive. Krishna's devotees go out of their way, even at their own risk, to encourage everyone and anyone to chant Hare Krishna and in this way help spread the Sankirtan movement of Sri Caitanya Mahabarahu.

As for any offensive committed while chanting the Holy Name, it is recommended that we just continue to chant sincerely and pray for Krishna's forgiveness. Being most merciful, and knowing our sincerity, Krishna will help us overcome any offense and give us good direction on how to advance in His devotional service.

It is so nice to hear that you are seriously taking to this process of Krishna Consciousness and regularly chanting Hare Krishna.

Sincerely,

By coming as His devotee the Lord personally teaches how one can attain the supreme goal of all self realization, pure love of Godhead, by sincere and pure unalloyed devotional service. This He does by His personal example, and His extensive instructions imparted to direct associates during His advent. His most intimate associates were the goswami's of Vrindaban headed by Srila Rupa Goswami and Srila Sanatana Goswami. These great personalities have provided a storehouse of transcendental instruction on devotional service for our benefit of mankind in this fallen age.

This process is very simple, and begins with our adopting the chanting of the Holy Name of the Lord

...So we humbly encourage everyone to adopt this simple method, take advantage of this wonderful movement by devotee association and completely satisfy your intellect by becoming absorbed in the wonderful books presented by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada and the Goswami's of Vrindaban.

From the perspective of ISKCON this IRM's understanding of guru is not in accordance with guru parampara, those instructions coming down directly from Lord Krishna through His direct disciplic succession. ... Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the founder acarya of ISKCON is the only spiritual master, even for new devotees just coming to this Krishna Consciousness movement, akin to the Christian concept that Lord Jesus Christ is the only way.

However, we understand from the teachings of Srila Prabhupada as presented in his books and all the recorded media made while he was manifest, that he personally never gave any instruction that he was to remain the initiating guru for everyone who would ever come to Krishna Consciousness in the future. Quite to the contrary he expressed both in his books and verbal instruction that he desired the all his disciples become qualified spiritual masters and continue this disciplic succession as it has been done since time immemorial, by their personally becoming guru.

Additionally the IRM has adopted a practice of criticizing all the leaders of ISKCON in a very personal way. This criticism of Krishna's devotees is not only atypical of accepted vaishnava etiquette but extremely dangerous to ones spiritual advancement. I can only recommend that you be very cautious in associating with members or proponents of this splinter group.

We should first understand the Lord Krishna is the origin of all other manifestations. Just as a candle can be lit from another, and after being lit is has the same lighting capacity, the origin of all other expansions (no matter if they be guna avatars, yuga avatars, lila avatars, shakti avatars or others) is Krishna.

The expansions of Krishna in regards to material creation are explained in the second canto of the Srimad Bhagavatam. But briefely Maha Vishnu (Karanadaksaya Visnu) lies in the causal ocean and from His breathing and pores all the universes are manifest. He then expands and enters each individual universe as Kshirodaksaya Visnu, from that Visnu expansion Lord Brahma is born from a lotus stem that emanates from His navel. Then from this Vishnu manifestation Kshirodayaksi Visnu enter the hearts of all living entities who take up residence in that particular universe.

The expansions of Godhead are unlimited like the waves of the ocean.

...I would suspect that the statements you have heard regarding Krishna's appearance by various devotees relate more to His not taking birth like the conditioned soul does. For as you so expertly pointed out Srimad Bhagavatam clearly states that Lord Krishna resided within womb of Mother Devaki and took birth. But He did not take birth like you and I take birth, for it is clearly stated that he was transferred from the transcendental mind of Vasudeva to Devaki's mind by initiation.

...So generally when devotees say that Krishna did not take birth from the womb, their point is more directed to those who would wrongly equate Krishna transcendental appearance with birth as the materialist knows it. Such a misunderstanding on their part would lead to their not comprehending Lord Krishna supreme position and transcendental appearance, but rather to their considering Him an ordinary human being. Although I am certainly not a linguistic scholar, I would suspect that a lot of this apparent confusion comes from the difficulties involved in presenting the advanced spiritual concepts available through the Sanskrit language into English.

...Please continue with your thoughtful study of Bhagavad-gita As It Is and Srimad Bhagavatam, for this combined with regulated chanting of the Holy Name and taking shelter of the association of devotees are our only true solace in this fallen age of quarrel and hypocrisy.

Of course you are correct that one of the symptoms of a pure devotee is his giving up all material attachments and taking full shelter of Krishna's lotus feet. However, there is no restriction in anyone and everyone doing so, no matter what their material situation.

It is apparent from your email that you are a sincere devotees desiring to rise the topmost platform of pure devotional service, and as Krishna is situated in your heart He is fully aware of your situation and sincerity.

But we can take instruction from the life of Krishna's dear most devotee Prablad Maharaj, he was similarly placed into very difficult circumstances due to his birth in a demoniac family and all the attempts by his demoniac father to convert him to his demoniac lifestyle. However, Prahlad Maharaj persevered and ultimately was personally saved by Lord Kirshna in His manifestation as Lord Nrsimhadeva. So I would suggest that you take shelter of Prahlad Maharaj, and adopt his example of continually taking shelter of Lord Krishna despite your difficult circumstance.

...However, we must also acknowledge the spiritual significance of this important movement to the upliftment of human society and not, so to speak, "throw out the baby with the bath water." I have been associated with this movement for close to 40 years, having joined in 1971, and believe me I have seen it all. But what I mean when I say "I have seen it all" is that I have seen not only the difficulties due to our immaturity, but I have seen also our great successes do to the mercy of guru and Krishna. The vast majority of sincere and humble devotees who have dedicated their lives to spreading Krishna Consciousness according to Srila Prabhupada's instructions greatly exceeds those few unfortunate exceptions who often only misrepresent devotional service.

So please, I beg of you, don't judge all of Krishna's sincere devotees by the ruler that should be taken to the back sides of errant leaders. Lord Caitanya and Srila Prabhupada desire the ultimate success of this great ISKCON institution, and it therefore behooves all sincere devotees to dedicate their lives to supporting this institution for the glorification of its most exalted founder. This of course does not mean that we must support any foolish so-called leader who does not live up to Srila Prabhupada's spiritual standard.

If we choose the path of sense enjoyment by exploitation of this material world for our selfish enjoying tendency then we become subject to the stringent lays of material nature. Therefore, although you are correct in your understanding that ultimately Krishna is controlling everything, His control is like that of a loving parent. ... The good and bad reactions (karma) that result from our not following Krishna's good instruction are dependent upon our proper use, or misuse, of free will.

A devotee "does everything for Krishna" by agreeing to fully follow His good instruction, as provided in Bhagavad-gita and other bonafide spiritual sources, out of love for Him. If one can adopt such a course of action in his life Krishna assures in Bhagavad-gita that He will protect such a sincere devotee from all sinful reactions in this material world.

In this Krishna consciousness movement we are therefore recommending the simple process of chanting the Lord's holy names as the purifying agent by which we can fully awaken our spiritual consciousness and express our love for Lord Krishna

One Abhimanyu is the nephew of Krishna in Dwaraka lila, and the other is the wife of Radharani in Vraja lila. As for Lord Brahma, his wife is Sarasvati, not Radharani.

Aside from this slight confusion as explained above, we must remember that Krishna's pastimes are entirely on the transcendental platform. When Lord Krishna manifests in the material world to attract us by His divine pastimes, He is not subject to the laws of this material world. So even if there is some apparent discrepancy in moral behavior by the Supreme Lord, He always remains above such rules and regulations. His activities are always on the transcendental platform and supremely beneficial being full of wonderful benediction for all involved. So when hearing of His divine play with the Gopies of Vindaban we should never equate His dealings with those of the materially conditioned souls.

Lord Krishna explains in the 2nd chapter of Bhagavad-gita that material anger is the result of unfilled lust ultimately resulting in delusion, bewilderment of memory and our falling further into the clutches of His external energy. Of course any emotion which has Krishna at the center can be spiritualized, therefore we have the superlative example of Hanuman's anger being used in service to Lord Ramachandra when his wrath against Ravana was exhibited by burning Ravana's city.

Krishna explains that we must control the mind, but control of the mind is not possible if we do not adopt a lifestyle of controlling the senses. So control of the mind goes hand in hand with control of the senses. Unfortunately, in this day and age control of the senses is very difficult for we are bombarded constantly with enticements to eat, drink and be merry. Therefore Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, the Golden avatar for this fallen age, has recommended that everyone take up the simple process of chanting the maha mantra

...in order to easily control the mind, cleanse the heart of all material desire, and enjoy our eternal spiritual nature of eternity, knowledge and bliss.

This ultimate meditation technique if adopted by regulated daily practice will bring gradual awareness of your true spiritual nature, and relieve the agitated mind of all distress.

Actually Krishna manifests in a rainbow of various colors when He appears in the material world in His various incarnations. Why His original form of Syamasundara in His spiritual abode, Goloka Vrindaban, is blackish like the rain cloud is ultimately because of His independent free will. Just as we have free will, being infinitesimal parts of His spiritual nature, He has free will to manifest His divine spiritual form as He desires. His blackish hue gives unlimited spiritual bliss to His eternal consorts in that transcendental realm, which therefore increases His pleasure. Therefore there is constant competition between the Lord and His devotees in loving exchange. So attractive is His transcendental form that it is recommended that one who still has some desire to enjoy this material world not see Krishna standing by the bank of the Yamuna for they will be drawn to constantly drink the nectar of His beauty and abandon all material desire.

Although a devotee understands that ultimately everything is fully dependent upon Krishna's desire, he still works in such a way as to properly maintain his material existence. Understanding that we are in this material world, but not of this material world does not negate our responsibilities in life. We are all eternally servants of the Supreme Lord who is the creator and proprietor of our material bodies, we are just the temporary tenant. So just as any tenant is not allowed to destroy his residence, we are not permitted to neglect our bodies under the irresponsible impression that the landlord would not care.

In fact there are three situations that one should immediately deal with for a peaceful life - fire, debt and illness. By maintaining a responsible lifestyle in regards to both our material and spiritual life we can make firm progress self realization.

Unfortunately, due to our independent desire we are now situated in His external material potency and can therefore not experience our inherent spiritual nature. In this bewildered condition we mistakenly accept this material body as our self and try in so many ways to exploit the material world for our enjoyment. Krishna Consciousness is the remedy for this disease of illusory material life, and employs the chanting of the Lords transcendental names

...Although it is not recommended that one chant for material benefit we see many instances where one takes to the process of Krishna Consciousness with some ulterior motive. ... Due to his determined efforts and prayers in devotional service Krishna appeared to him, as which time he was overwhelmed with Krishna's all attractive transcendental qualities. ... So one may approach Krishna with some ulterior motive, but by the potency of devotional service he will ultimately be fully purified of all material desires.

So please take seriously to this process of Krishna Consciousness, for your life will become sublime.

For the practicing devotee there are some very important practices necessary for control of the fickle mind. For-most is regulated chanting of the maha mantra

So when we perform selfless service or work within this world, the practice of karma yoga, that is devotional service when the service is done under Krishna's direction. Since the teachings of Bhagavad-gita are given by Krishna personally to Arjuna that selfless practice of karma yoga is naturally devotional service.

You question also shows your deep understanding that there can be karma yoga outside devotional service when the sacrifice of the fruits of our activities are performed outside Krishna's direction. Of course from the absolute perspective there is nothing outside of Krishna, as He is the ultimate source of everything. So the distinguishing factor is Krishna's involvement, is karma yoga being done under His direction or the direction of His devotee. Even if there is some material motivation, elevation to the heavenly planets, freedom from the miseries of karmic reaction, etc., if the service is done in accordance with HIs directions it is to considered devotional service. ...The beginning of Krishna Consciousness is faith, for without some faith in the process of self realization presented by Lord Krishna in Bhagavad-gita and distributed by His sincere devotees coming in the parampara, the disciplic succession of bonafide spiritual masters, one cannot advance in spiritual life. But this faith is not blind faith, Krishna or His bonafide representative is fully qualified to impart transcendental knowledge because they are not under the influence of the illusory material energy. This faith increases as one hears from the bonafide spiritual master and takes advantage of his saintly association. This leads to gradual acceptance of his instructions as one develops some determination, more advanced faith, to take up the spiritual practice of devotional service for his purification. As one advances in devotional service all the unwanted desires in the heart are gradually eradicated as the mirror of the mind is cleansed.

...So as you can see, true faith is gradually developed in the process of Krishna Consciousness as the aspiring devotee becomes more and more enlivened by association with the spiritual master and the following his instructions.

This is a far cry from the senseless and fanatic adoption of some religious doctrine devoid of a firm grounding in transcendental knowledge descending from the Supreme Lord Himself.

However your question is greatly appreciated for it brings to light the unfortunate situations we are confronted with in this most fallen age of mankind, Kali Yuga. ... No longer do people care to utilize this human form of life for self realization, rather they will do anything and everything to gratify their senses without consideration of the consequences. Therefore even the simplest tasks, commerce and finance, they complicate with risky schemes to cheat and exploit each other in their madness to enjoy to the fullest extent.

For an aspiring transcendentalist such as your good self, the adversity and conflict created by rampant materialism actually provides a great opportunity for spiritual advancement. In Kali Yuga we are constantly reminded of the miseries of material existence as we observe that despite mankind's so called advancement, they are simply becoming more and more entangled. The process of Krishna consciousness is the yoga of reuniting with Lord Krishna in eternal loving exchange (bhakti) by removal of the unwanted desires for independent enjoyment that now pollute our heart.

And this process of cleansing the heart of unwanted desires has been made very easy by Krishna Himself in His incarnation as Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

...as the sublime method of reviving our pure love for God and removing all unwanted desires, independent of this eternal love, from the heart.

Lord Krishna has pointed out in His instructions to Arjuna in Bhagavad-gita three significant factors that comprise spiritual understanding at the end of the fifth chapter. Knowledge that Krishna is the supreme enjoyer of all sacrifces and austerities, the supreme proprietor of all planets and demigods, and ultimate benefactor and well wisher of all living entities.

...Take immediate advantage of the chanting of the Hare Krishna maha mantra on a daily basis, become immersed in the philosophy of Bhagavad-gita and Srimad Bhagavatam by attentive reading or attendance of temple lectures, and most importantly associate with Krishna's devotees by participation in the Sankirtan movement of Lord Caitanya. This will assure your rapid progress to the platform of Krishna's pure devotee and allow you to taste the transcendental nectar of spiritual life to your full satisfaction.

Your question, why if Lord Krishna is all powerful and full independent in providing for us, does he allow us to be subjected to the miseries of material existence.

...By this independence we can enter into a spiritual communion with Krishna in an intimate living exchange in one of five primary relationships, neutrality, servitorship, friendship, parenthood and intimate lover.

...And thus we become subject to the illusion that we are these material bodies and by this bodily misidentification we suffer in material existence. This so called suffering is simply due to our misidentification with these material bodies and as Krishna explains in the Bhagavad-gita one must learn tolerate them, realizing their temporary nature.

Krishna's external material energy, comprising all the various seasons of man (the yugas), seasons of the year, seasons of our lives (boyhood, youth, manhood, old age) and all the other varieties we experience are simply due to this misuse of our spiritual independence.

We will be relieved of all these miseries of material life as we take to our true spiritual nature and revive our loving relationship with God. Relieving us of these material miseries is Krishna's objective and why His material energy in all its various manifestations ultimately bewilders and frustrates when we misuse our independence.

Because of this bodily misconception we are deprived of our true spiritual nature which is eternal, knowledgeable and full of bliss.

The whole point of spiritual life is to gradually enlighten us to the stage of full realization of our true spiritual self. Lord Krishna wants us to enjoy on the spiritual platform, where life is eternal and not subjected to the miseries created by bodily misidentification. To that end one is recommended to restrain from those activities which reinforce a bodily misconception, or which sex is the most prominent.

If you carefully read Bhagavad-gita you will find that Krishna, while directing us to curtail bodily misidentification by taking up a regulated life of spiritual practice, does not prohibit sex life. ... The main point is to gradually mold all our activities in such a way that we bring to an end our entanglement in material life which is just a miserable state of affairs to the pure spirit soul.

To that end Buddha preached nonviolence and denounced the Vedas in order to curb misuse of those portions which allow animal sacrifice under strict regulation. As Lord Krishna explains in the Bhagavad-gita, whenever and wherever there is a decline in religious principles and an predominance of ill-religion I advent myself to reestablish religious principal.

Lord Buddha preached ahimsa, nonviolence to all living entities, so yes his teachings included no killing of animals for eating and any true follower of His teachings would be a vegetarian.

...In this age He has manifested as Lord Caitanya Mahabrabhu and inaugurated the Sankirtan movement for the spiritual upliftment of humanity in this fallen age.

...So at this time Lord Buddha's teachings, although nonviolence is certainly a principal of great significance for spiritual advancement, are not as importing as the chanting of the Lords holy names.

The incarnations of the Supreme Lord display their mystic opulence as necessary, and although Lord Buddha had no need to manifest these wonders, His conversion of suffering humanity to the path of nonviolence was in itself a Supreme display of His potency.

In the last question I believe you are referring the Mother Yoshoda, if so she is Lord Krishna's mother during His manifest pastimes here on earth and also in Goloka, Lord Krishna's eternal abode.

How to become Krishna's pure devotee

<dc:subject>Welcome</dc:subject>

The answer to your inquiry is beyond the scope of one email response, but I will attempt to give some instruction that will assist in your development of pure Krishna Consciousness.

Because knowledge of Lord Krishna encompasses all aspects of both the material and spiritual worlds one must first become familiar with the basics of our true spiritual nature. Therefore regular thoughtful study of Bhagavad-gita As It Is is certainly necessary both for our complete enlightenment in the basics of spiritual knowledge, and the benefit of Krishna's personal association afforded by reading His instructions.

...In order to take advantage of the full effect of this chanting it must be done on a regular basis (daily) and for a fixed number of rounds. Of course spiritual advancement is a gradual process, but we should take on some vow to Krishna and maintain it for maximum benefit.

...Humbly service rendered to Krishna's devotees and the mercy afforded by their transcendental association assures our rapid advancement in spiritual life. This association is available by reading the books they have written about Krishna, hearing them speak about Krishna by attending lectures or hearing classes online if we do not live near a temple, and offering some menial service to assist them in spreading this Krishna Consciousness movement.

So gradually take up this process of Krishna Consciousness in all sincerity, chant Hare Krishna, read about Krishna, associate with Krishna's devotees, take Krishna's prasadam, and try to constantly remember Krishna, in this way your desire to become a pure devotee will eventually be realized.

Regarding you position in devotional life, Krishna assures in Bhagavad-gita that any progress we have made is never lost. So please have full confidence that you will be able to easily take up where you left off in your devotional practice. Please reestablished your devotional practice by regularly chanting, reading and associating with devotees as much as your circumstance allows.

Most important at this stage is to again regularly chant a fixed number of rounds and readopt the regulated lifestyle of devotion life. As Srila Prabhupada repeatedly stressed, our devotional life is one of practice, so your renewal of that practice will easily reaffirm your initiation. After some time you may feel the need to reinforce your sraddha (faith) by taking shelter of another diksha guru, or the siksha (guidance) of other advanced devotees.

I sincerely hope this has provided some help, and I wish you all success in your renewed devotional practice as you take full shelter of Krishna's holy name.

...Krishna's external potency, His material energy, deludes us in so many ways if we are not careful to always remember our true spiritual nature and position. ... We must continually work to advance ourselves spiritually, knowing that we are eternally Lord Krishna's servant and are not meant to suffer in His deluding potency due to misidentification with these material bodies.

I humbly beg that you take up a determined effort to take shelter at Krishna's lotus feet by absorbing yourself in the process of devotional service.

...This determined effort on your part will very quickly drive away all these useless thought that are troubling you, for Krishna assures us of His shelter if we follow this authorized process.

As you take up this process a remarkable transformation will begin and gradually to will come to the level of full renunciation (sannyasa) you spoke of in your email. In the beginning it is recommended that we gradually adopt a Krishna conscious lifestyle, not renounce all of a sudden, this assures our steady progress to the ultimate goal of complete absorption in spiritual practice.

Rest assured all your prayers will be answered as you daily associate with Krishna through His instructions in Bhagavad-gita and your meditation on His holy names.

So we must always be careful not to become two legged animals, for Krishna's external potency (Maya) is very strong and can force down us when our activities warrant it. ...In Krishna book we read about the cursing of two denizens of heaven who were so intoxicated that when the saint Narada Muni walked by, and they were naked and enjoying delights with women in a lake, they neglected to show proper respect and did not even cover their bodies. ... So when anyone has the contact of Krishna or His pure devotee they are so transcendentally potent that even birth in lower species because of extremely sinful activity can be rectified quickly.
